De Augustanahof
Sinds de zomer van 2017 heeft de Lutherse Diaconie een hofje in de Bos & Lommerbuurt.
In de Augustanahof met zestien (sociale) huurwoningen voor één- of tweepersoonshuishoudens (31-88 m²) wonen jong en oud naast elkaar. De jongste bewoner is in de twintig, de oudste boven de 90. Door samen te wonen op zo’n manier dat men omziet naar elkaar en naar de buurt, kunnen ouderen langer zelfstandig blijven wonen. Wie in de Augustanahof woont committeert zich aan het samen een leefgemeenschap vormen en zich inzetten voor elkaar en buurtactiviteiten.
Eén van de woningen is een gasthuis en bestemd voor een jongere die in de gemeenschap kan groeien naar zelfstandigheid. Hierbij wordt samengewerkt met Timon Jeugdhulp Amsterdam.
De hofkamer wordt ingezet worden voor activiteiten van kerk en buurt, zoals thematische bijeenkomsten, inloopactiviteiten en maaltijden. Hofbewoners, kerk en buurt dragen bij aan deze activiteiten, ondersteund door de Diaconie.
Hoewel er in het grootste deel van de vroegere kerkzaal woningen zijn gekomen, is het liturgisch centrum bewaard gebleven als kapel. Een plek voor kleinschalige vieringen en een plek voor mensen die stilte willen zoeken of een kaarsje branden.
Ook de aan de kapel grenzende stiltetuin is onderdeel van de Augustanahof, waar bezoekers en voorbijgangers welkom zijn.
Wonen, omzien naar elkaar, gastvrijheid en inspiratie
De drie oorspronkelijke functies van de Augustana, namelijk kerk, maatschappelijk en wonen bleven bewaard, maar kregen een nieuwe invulling met als grondwoorden:- samen wonen
- omzien naar elkaar in hof en buurt
- gastvrijheid
- stilte
- inspiratie

Repurposed church buildings for the good of conviviality
When church attendance and resources decline we could of course close our churches and withdraw ourselves behind the dykes. However, we could also investigate the possibilities to give our church buildings new religious and diaconal purposes. And research whether we could ‘move’ our church real estate, whether we would be able to literally and figuratively guard the ‘treasures’ that are entrusted to us (2 Timothy 1:14), and whether we could continue to be of service in our neighborhoods (conviviality), to be present and meaningful for the people. And in such a way that it is economically attainable for these projects to finance themselves.
As an example we present the Augustanakerk in Amsterdam-West which was converted into the Augustanahof.
From Augustanachurch to Augustanahof
Until early 2014 the Augustanachurch (1957) was used as a church building for the Lutheran congregation in Amsterdam-West. The congregation shrank and the church wardens of Lutheran Amsterdam had to cut back drastically. The Lutheran Diaconie decided to buy the church building in order to change it into communal living apartments.
The central idea in transforming the Augustanakerk into the Augustanahof was: Looking after each other and after the community in the neighborhood. The Diaconie built sixteen rental homes (mainly council housing), largely intended for elderly and young people. All residents signed the ‘Rule of the Augustana’ (living committedly).
Although the church hall was mainly converted into houses the liturgical center has been preserved as a chapel. And we kept the spacious kitchen en meetingroom for activities.
